Joao graduated with an integrated master’s degree from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2014.

In 2017, he moved to the UK, where he first completed a rotating internship at North Downs Specialist Referrals. In 2021, he completed a postgraduate certificate in Small Animal Cardiology with the University of Liverpool and was awarded the status of RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Cardiology.

Joao completed his ECVIM residency programme in Small Animal Cardiology at the University of Cambridge in 2024. In 2026, he was awarded the title of European Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology by the European College of Internal Medicine.

Joao currently continues to work in the UK as part of the Linnaeus Veterinary Group. His areas of clinical and research interest include arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation, pulmonary hypertension, feline cardiomyopathies and interventional cardiology.
