{"id":3850,"date":"2024-06-21T11:07:39","date_gmt":"2024-06-21T09:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ifevet.com\/uk\/?p=3850"},"modified":"2025-01-09T09:19:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T09:19:45","slug":"anaesthesia-and-analgesia-in-geriatric-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ifevet.com\/uk\/anaesthesia-and-analgesia-in-geriatric-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Anaesthesia and analgesia in geriatric patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Premedication<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Identifying, preventing and minimising pain is essential in the elderly patient.<\/li>\n<li>Midazolam appears to worsen balance and recovery in geriatric patients with peripheral vestibular syndrome.<\/li>\n<li>Administration of an atypical antidepressant such as trazodone may be considered, as it is fast-acting and of short duration.<\/li>\n<li>In cats, the use of gabapentin also decreases the level of stress and allows gentle management of the patient.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Induction and maintenance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pre-oxygenation for 5 minutes via a face mask is recommended.<\/li>\n<li>Evaluation of the airway and oral cavity, as different dental and gingival pathologies, masses, etc. may be present.<\/li>\n<li>Locoregional techniques are recommended.<\/li>\n<li>In patients who are administered chronic anti-inflammatory drugs, special care must be taken to maintain arterial pressures under general anaesthesia.
