After three years of equine practice, including an internship at the Animal Health Trust, he moved to the USA to undertake a residency in equine internal medicine at North Carolina State University (NCSU). This was followed by a PhD in physiology at the same institution. After the PhD, he did a residency in anaesthesia and analgesia and subsequently joined the clinical anaesthesia faculty at NCSU.
