Structure and benefits

The course is structured into two modules delivered over 24 presentations, 1 hour in duration. The course will present all aspects of diagnostic imaging to enable students to learn and have a good understanding of the different areas of imaging within a veterinary setting. Students will learn the general setup of equipment and machines, the physics and principles, patient considerations and restraint, positioning techniques and case studies. Each module will be taught by one or more experienced veterinary professionals nationwide, ensuring the highest possible quality of training.

Target Audience

This course is aimed at both qualified and student veterinary nurses who are currently enrolled in a nursing course or already working in small animal practice with a keen interest in diagnostic imaging and has a desire to expand their knowledge in this field, reinforcing their daily clinical experience.

It will be particularly beneficial for veterinary nurses seeking to specialise and gain experience in diagnostic imaging.

MODULE 1: Introduction to radiography

Module Summary:

  • Radiography Principles
  • Setting up for xrays
  • Health and Safety of radiography
  • Positioning – Head, teeth, Thorax, Abdomen
  • Positioning – Neck, Vertebral column, and limbs
  • Radiography case studies including comparison of normal.
  • Radiography of the exotic species: Birds
  • Radiography of the exotic species: Reptiles
  • Radiography of the exotic species: Small furries
  • Contrast techniques in radiography
  • Interventional radiograph
MODULE 2: Ultrasonography and advanced imaging

Module Summary:

  • Ultrasonographic principles, technique and interpretation
  • U/S case studies. Normal vs abnormal
  • Cardiology – Echo and Fluoroscopy
  • Exotic ultrasound techniques and case studies
  • Point of care Ultrasound
  • Nurse role in Ultrasound
  • CT – principles, image acquisition, use of contrast
  • Comparing use of traditional radiography with contrast studies and CT with contrast.
  • CT case studies
  • MRI – principles, positioning, patient safety
  • MRI – case studies
  • MRI and CT used for exotic specie
